What if data could breathe?
How can one open a European bioinformatics conference other than with a speech, a video, or an institutional presentation?
Our response began with a question:
What if data could breathe?
From this idea emerged an immersive performance that brings together dance, visual art, and data.
THE CHALLENGE: Bringing a scientific topic to life
Bioinformatics deals with complex data.
But behind these data lie life, research, connections, and movement.
The creative challenge, therefore, was to translate a scientific concept into an experience that an audience could immediately relate to.
Without oversimplifying the issue.
Without resorting to mere decorative animation.
And without losing sight of the very purpose of the conference.
THE IDEA: If Data Could Breathe
We conceived “If Data Could Breathe” as a meeting between two languages.
That of the body.
And the issue of data.
Dance helped give a human and organic dimension to a world usually represented by numbers, graphs, or visualizations.
The visual design served to extend the movements and set the entire performance within a world inspired by data.
So the goal was not to add a performance to the conference.
The performance was an interpretation of the conference topic.
FROM CONCEPT TO STAGE
An idea truly exists only when it can be brought to life.
Starting with the concept, épisode(s) worked on the artistic direction and set design, then brought together a choreographer, dancers, and a visual designer who all shared the same vision.
Each discipline was expected to function independently but, above all, to engage in dialogue with the others.
Movement.
Image.
Space.
Music.
Timing.
Technology.
It is the coordination of the whole that transforms multiple areas of expertise into a single experience.

BEHIND THE SCENES — Bringing Different Worlds Together
Custom performances require a specific type of production.
It's not enough to simply select an artist and assign them a performance slot.
We need to develop a common language among the various stakeholders.
The artists must understand the creative concept.
The artistic vision must take into account the stage and the technical possibilities.
The visual content must be synchronized with the performance.
And the whole thing must work in the real-world context of a conference.
This is precisely where the artistic direction and production teams must work together.
CREATIVITY WITH A PURPOSE
We love bold ideas.
But an idea is only interesting if it addresses a challenge.
In this project, the performance was not intended simply to impress the audience.
She was tasked with bridging the gap between science, technology, and emotion and setting the tone for the conference right from the start.
That's also how we approach event planning:
Don't look for an activity just to fill the program; look for an idea that gives meaning to the moment.
